「FAKE CALIFORNIA FORCEFIELD」はCyber Cherryによる「最初の」アルバムだが、「1枚目の」アルバムではない。

2023年、6ヶ月間の試作のもとに集まった曲で構成された本作は、「序章」や「アルバム・ゼロ」と呼んだほうがしっくりくるかもしれない。若いアーティストが楽曲制作を始め、ソングライターとして自身を形づくっていこうとする探究の過程がよく表れたアルバムだ。

サイバーチェリーは西日本で生まれ育ち、現在は東京在住。日本と海外のポップ・カルチャーから幅広く影響を受けた背景が音楽として表現され、そのジャンルレスな宅録音楽の数々は、力強くドリーミー、キャッチーでもあり、それでもってカオス。デモ音源やお試し曲集と呼ぶにはあまりにも洗練されている音楽の中に、どこからともなく現れた、注目すべき才能が光る。

アルバムの題名には、「模倣から学べ」というCyber Cherryの初心者としての心得が皮肉とともに込められていると同時に、無限の可能性を秘めたもう一つの世界 ── デヴィッド・リンチが描くハリウッドのような、暗闇と恐怖が渦巻く得体の知れない空想上のアメリカン・ポップ ── が、ルーティン・ワークとビルによって狭められた東京から自分を守る盾のように構築されている。

Fake California Forcefield is the first album of Cyber Cherry but it is not album No.1.

More a prologue or “album 0”, it gathers together songs made over a dizzying 6-month creative journey in late 2023, charting the young artist’s first musical explorations as she began constructing her identity as a songwriter and musician.

Based in Tokyo but with a background spent moving around Western Japan, Cyber Cherry’s music draws from a wide range of pop cultural influences, both Japanese and overseas. Composed primarily of genre-hopping bedroom recordings, the album is at once energetic, dreamlike, catchy, chaotic. Far more sophisticated than just a sketchpad of demos, it marks the appearance of a remarkable talent out of seemingly nowhere.

The title of the album nods ironically to Cyber Cherry’s position as a newcomer, learning through imitation. However, it also constructs a world that is, on the one hand, horizonless and full of creative possibility, while on the other hand an eerie, surreal place touched by darkness and fear — pop music as an imaginary America of Hollywood and David Lynch, where a person might find a temporary defence shield against the stress of Tokyo’s oppressive skylines and predictable routines.
