音楽のパラレルワールドを密かに垣間見ることができる、アルバム“Music for Tourists - A Passport for Alternative Japan”。日本中の最もエキサイティングな16バンドによる16トラックの新曲を集めたコンピレーション。本作はリスナーを、インディーロック、アートパンク、ポストロック、インダストリアルのジャーニーに連れて行くようなアルバムである。あたかも車窓の風景が次々に変わっていくように、音楽の風景が変化していく作品だ。

アルバムタイトルはブライアン・イーノの1978年のアルバム「Ambient 1: Music for Airports」に因んでいるが、本コンピはアンビエントというよりも、アルバムの最初から揺さぶられる音楽となっている。そして、「Music for Tourists」というアルバム名は、人々が移動するairportのような静的な場所ではなく、より動的なもの、つまり探検と発見に重点を置き、そのairportを通じて見知らぬ場所へ旅行する人々のための音楽であることを意味している。

コンピアルバムに収録されている音楽全ては、探究心旺盛なスピリットそのものであり、全トラックは新曲又はコンピのために特別に作られたもの。リスナーにとっては、初めて耳にする参加アーティストもいるだろう。その中には地元のシーンだけでなく、シーンを超えて話題を集めている多くの新人も含まれており、どのバンドもエッセンシャルで、必聴でかつスリリングなアーティストだ。

Music for Tourists - A Passport for Alternative Japan” offers a secret glimpse into a parallel world of music. Gathering 16 new tracks by some of the most exciting bands from around Japan, it’s a journey that take the listener through a shifting landscape of indie rock, art-punk, post-rock and industrial sounds

The title nods to Brian Eno’s 1978/79 album “Ambient 1: Music for Airports” but rather than ambient music, this is music that demands your attention from the start. And rather than being a static place the people travel through like an airport, “Music for Tourists” aims to be something more dynamic: music for the people travelling through that airport to unfamiliar places, with the emphasis on exploration and discovery.

The music featured on the album represent that curious spirit of discovery. All the tracks are either wholly new songs or otherwise unique versions, created specially for the album. The artists are ones most listeners will be hearing for the first time, including many newcomers who have been attracting buzz within, and increasingly beyond, their local scenes. But all of them are vital, urgent and thrilling.
