"Afternoon At The Library”（図書館の午後）は、世界の反対側にいるアーティスト同士によるユニークな国際コラボレーションです。このプロジェクトは、フィンランドのヘルシンキ中央図書館で始まりました。ロンドンのアーティストSun Drawing (a.k.a.ドローン・ポップバンドThe Leaf LibraryのギタリストMatt Ashton)が、2023年の夏に一連のトラックを録音しました。これらのセッションの結果として生まれたのが、アコースティックギター、ピアノ、そして街の様々な場所でのフィールド録音を組み合わせた、夢のように淡く繊細な音のスケッチをまとめたアルバム「Aamut Kirjastossa(図書館の朝）」です。

そのフィンランドから英国への最初のつながりが、2024年には日本へと広がりました。
福岡を拠点とするエクスペリメンタル／ポストロックバンド「SEA LEVEL」の協力によるものです。中心メンバーであるMakoto Onuki(蟬 etc.) とTakeshi Yamamoto (SACOYANS / マクマナマン　etc.)のデュオが、このオリジナルアルバムの基盤に新鮮な音の層とボーカルを加え、豊かな響きを作り上げました。

Sun Drawingのアルバムは「Aamut Kirjastossa(図書館の朝）」であるのに対して、今回のコラボアルバムは、ヨーロッパと日本の時差にちなんで「Afternoons At The Library （図書館の午後）」と名付けられました。
このアルバムは、コラボレーションであると同時に翻訳の行為でもあります。2組のアーティストがお互いの音の中に空間を見つけ、それぞれや音楽的アイデンティティを表現しながら融合していく様子が描かれています。さらに、このアルバムには、福岡のシンガーソングライターであり「SACOYANS」のリーダーでもあるSACOYANのボーカルがフューチャーされています。

“Afternoons At The Library” is a unique international collaboration between artists on opposite sides of the world.

It’s also a journey, which began in Finland at the Helsinki Central Library, where Sun Drawing (a.k.a. Matt Ashton of London-based drone-pop band The Leaf Library) recorded a series of tracks over the summer of 2023. Those sessions resulted in the album “Aamut Kirjastossa [Mornings At The Library]”, which combines acoustic guitar, piano and field recordings from around the city into sparse, dreamlike sonic sketches.

That initial link from Finland to the UK extended to Japan in 2024, thanks to Fukuoka-based experimental/post-rock band Sea Level. Centred around the core duo of Makoto Onuki (tepPohseen/Semi) and Takeshi Yamamoto (Macmanaman/SACOYANS), the group built on the foundations of the original album, adding rich new layers of sound and vocals.

Taking the title “Afternoons At The Library” in recognition of the time difference between Europe and Japan, the album is both a collaboration and an act of translation. It sees the two artists both finding spaces within each other’s sounds, simultaneously expressing and merging their musical identities.

In addition to Ashton, Onuki and Yamamoto’s work, the album also features vocal contributions from Fukuoka singer songwriter (and SACOYANS leader) Sacoyan.
