former_airlineの前作フルアルバム『Postcards from No Mand’s Land』は、2020年にCall And Response
Recordsからリリースされた、都市生活におけるCOVID-19パンデミック前後の不安と空虚を描いた不穏でアンビエントな作品であった。その後、自主レーベルFALRecから配信、カセット、CD-Rといったフォーマットで複数のEPを発表し、再びCall And Responseとタッグを組んで完成させた意欲作が、最新フルアルバム『Breath of the
Machineries』である。
テーマは「機械の息づかい」。すっかりSF化した現実に辟易しつつも、ファンタジーとノスタルジーを駆動力に、夢想とディストピアの狭間で音を紡ぎ上げたアルバムである。レイ・ブラッドベリやシオドア・スタージョンの短編、そしてデヴィッド・リンチ作品からの影響が随所に漂い、結果的にリンチへの追悼の意も込められた、幻想奇譚的な音世界が広がっている。
制作は従来の手法から大きく転換し、アイデア先行で手探りのアプローチを採用。録音機材のズレや音のかけ違いから生まれた偶然性に導かれながら、新たなサウンドを構築した。さらに、1990年代に宅録していたカセットの断片音をサンプリングし、アルバム全体の質感に独自の陰影を与えている。また、ブロードキャストのカヴァー曲“Roses Red”を収録。本曲は、トリッシュ・キーナンの死後、バンド最後のデモ音源をまとめた『Spell Blanket』（2024年）に収められたもので、そのはかなさ、宇宙的郷愁、そして現実離れしたメランコリーに心を奪われ、即座に録音されたという。結果的に本作のテーマに完璧に呼応する楽曲となった。
本作完成後、活動拠点を東京から大阪へと移したことも、アルバムに深い意味を与えている。コンクリートの繭に包まれた東京の、奇妙に落ち着く寂寥感を封じ込めた音の記録であり、former_airlineにとって大きな転換点を刻む一枚となった。
former_airline’s previous full-length album“Postcards from No Mand's Land", released in 2020 from Call And Response Records, was an eerie, atmospheric work that depicted the anxiety and emptiness
of urban life before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Following a string of online, cassette and CD-R EPs from his own FALRec label, “Breath of the Machineries” is an ambitious new full-length
release that sees former_airline team up once more with Call And Response.
With its central theme of “the breathing of machines”, the album is driven by a sense of fantasy and nostalgia, as well as the tension between dream and a dystopian reality that has itself become
science-fiction. Drawing on influences from Ray Bradbury, Theodore Sturgeon and David Lynch (for whom the album became a form of unintended tribute), these elements come together into a musical
landscape from the pages of weird fiction.
The production process of the album employed new approaches, exploring ideas through trial-and-error, incorporating happy accidents from misalignment of musical gear and recording equipment, and
drawing on fragments of sounds from tapes the artist recorded as far back as the 1990s. The album also features a cover of the song “Roses Red” by Broadcast, released in 2024 on the album “Spell
Blanket”, which collected the group’s final demos from before vocalist Trish Keenan’s 2011 death. The song’s atmosphere of transient beauty, cosmic nostalgia and abstract melancholy found a
natural place for itself in “Breath of the Machineries” as all its pieces came together under the album title’s broad theme.
With the artist’s relocation from Tokyo to Osaka, the album also marks a turning point and a memorial record to Tokyo and the strangely calming loneliness of its concrete
cocoon.
